New Artistic, Creative & Image Director of Céline, Hedi Slimane, has spoken to Business of Fashion of his plans to introduce the ‘drop’ method when releasing parts of his new collection. The retail strategy is commonly used by highly sought after streetwear labels such as Supreme and includes releasing small portions of his collection every week or so to coincide with his main collection for the brand. The new strategy was revealed in an interview with Business of Fashion which also revealed plans for pop-up stores and small capsules to feature Slimane’s season-less staples such as jeans and casual wear.
Slimane has already announced Célene will be moving into menswear as well as producing fragrances and couture. He is also set to remodel each and every one of the Céline retail stores and owners LVMH are also rumoured to be buying up large retail space in New Yorks upper East side. Business of Fashion notes that although Slimane is very respectful of the brand he doesn’t feel beholden to the minimalist casual luxury vibe created—and beloved among the label’s loyal customers—by former Céline designer Phoebe Philo. If you were into the rockstar look Slimane began at his tenure at Dior Homme and then continued at Saint Laurent, chances are you’ll be quite happy with this new version of Céline. “He is doing exactly what he was hired to do, bringing his own vision to the brand,” the BoF report reads. It is still unknown what Phoebe Philo is set to do next but this will certainly be the end of Phoebe’s Céline and her simple aesthetic praised for being a brand that was instantly recognisable without having to shout.
Hedi Slimane has been named as new artistic, creative & image director of Celine by LVMH this morning. Hedi will take over from Phoebe Philo, who announced her resignation last December, starting February 1st. Former Saint Laurent Creative director, Hedi will oversee Womenswear, Menswear, Couture and Fragrance. Phoebe Philo’s style is very different to Hedi, her collections were for made for the working women, like herself. Slimane was also the founding designer at Dior Homme, and is one of the most controversial designers of his generation. He reinvigorated Yves Saint Laurent with what some critics called a narrowly defined rock look but that sold at record levels for the brand. Bernard Arnault, chairman & Chief executive of LVMH said in a statement “He is one of the most talented designers of our time. I have been a great admirer of his work since we collaborated on Dior Homme, which he launched to global critical acclaim in the 2000s. His arrival at Céline reinforces the great ambitions that LVMH has for this maison.” Good friend and Hedi admirer Karl Lagerfeld, Creative Director of Chanel, congratulated Slimane saying “I am enchanted, what a great choice”.
Philo will show her final collection in Paris in March. Hedi’s first collection will take place in in September 2018.
After 10 years as Creative Director of the Parisian luxury brand Céline, designer Phoebe Philo is to step down. The British designers final show will be the SS18 show set to take place in Paris in March. In a statement from the brand Philo said “Working with Céline has been an exceptional experience for me these last 10 years. I am grateful to have worked with an incredibly talented and committed team and I would like to thank everyone along the way who has been part of the collaborations and conversations. It’s been amazing.” Philo joined Céline in 2008, after a tenure at Chloé, and over the 10 years has redefined how women dress, from revitalising the Stan Smith trainer she wore at the end of her catwalk shows, to turning out leather ‘it’ bags with ease as well as her famously edgy campaigns in collaboration with Juergen Teller. Rumours of her next role include a possible move to Burberry.
